Residents are being advised to stay away from an area in Romsey due to a suspected gas leak at an industrial park.

The Hampshire fire service confirmed they responded to the incident near Timsbury earlier today. Police are assisting gas workers with road closures at Wynford Industrial Park in Belbins.

Gas company SGN stated that engineers will be on site throughout the evening and assured that there has been no disruption to gas supplies for homes or businesses.

Several roads around Rudd Lane, including Bunny Lane, Yokesford Hill, and Sandy Lane, have been closed as a precaution.

Witnesses reported a strong gas odor and a loud hissing sound at the site. Local resident Pete Fielder likened the noise to a mix of a steam train and a fighter jet, noting the unusual nature of the situation near his farm, where multiple gas mains are located.

Although authorities have stated there is no immediate danger to the public, some residents may need to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

The fire service advised people in the area to keep doors and windows shut.

SGN indicated that their engineers will continue working on site into the evening to reduce pressure in the pipeline and assess the repairs needed, with further updates expected tomorrow.

They reassured that the gas odor will lessen as pressure decreases.
