Report: Chinese App Meant to Prevent Fraud Could Monitor Tibetans
According to a recent report, a Chinese app designed to stop fraud might also be used to watch over Tibetans.
Researchers found that the app could track users’ texts, internet history, and access personal information. Some Tibetans claim they’re being made to download the app.
This comes amid growing restrictions in Tibet, with increased surveillance by the government, especially in sensitive areas like Tibet and Xinjiang.
The app, named the National Anti-Fraud Centre app, was introduced in 2021 to combat scams but could potentially aid in surveillance efforts.
The report calls for better privacy protection and urges companies not to support China’s surveillance programs.
This follows previous instances of Chinese authorities using surveillance to control minority groups, such as the Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
