Pope Francis Fights Pneumonia and Rumors of Resignation

According to Reuters, Pope Francis has been in the hospital for nearly three weeks battling double pneumonia. At 88 years old, his health struggles have sparked rumors about his possible resignation or even death.

Some newspapers have even started discussing what might happen during a papal funeral, while a few Catholic cardinals have openly talked about the chance of Francis stepping down, just as his predecessor, Benedict XVI, did in 2013.

However, Reuters reports that the Vatican has shared updates suggesting the Pope’s condition is improving, despite a recent setback. Friends and close observers of Francis, like his biographer Elisabetta Pique, say he has no plans to resign. “He’s always been a fighter,” Pique told Reuters, adding that Francis doesn’t give in under pressure.

The rumors began shortly after Francis was hospitalized. Italian Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi hinted in a radio interview that the Pope might consider resigning, while French Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline said “everything is possible” when asked about it.

Despite this, Francis has laughed off the speculation. After meeting with Italy’s Prime Minister, he joked, “Some have been praying for the pope to go to heaven, but the Lord of the Harvest thinks it best to keep me here.”

Reuters explains that Francis has ruled out resigning in the past, calling it a “distant hypothesis.” Like previous popes, he signed a resignation letter after becoming pope in 2013, but it’s only meant to be used if he becomes mentally unable to lead. Church law also states that a pope’s resignation must be his own free decision.

Even from the hospital, Francis continues to lead the Catholic Church. He’s been meeting with Vatican officials, signing documents, and making decisions, all while sending a clear message: “He’s still the pope,” as biographer Austen Ivereigh told Reuters.

Doctors haven’t said when Francis will leave the hospital, but many Catholics are used to seeing a frail pope. The late John Paul II struggled with Parkinson’s for years before his death in 2005.

Francis, known for his hard work and sense of humor, remains focused on his duties. As Pique told Reuters, “His big weapon is always prayer, and good humour.”

In short, while rumors swirl, Pope Francis is determined to continue his role, showing strength and resilience even from his hospital bed.
