The social media head of a major opposition party in India, Arun Reddy from the Congress Party, was arrested for sharing a fake video of the interior minister, Amit Shah.

The video falsely portrayed Shah promising to cut support for millions of poor Indians. The Congress Party denies Reddy’s involvement and accuses the authorities of targeting rivals during the ongoing national election.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denies these allegations. Amit Shah, often regarded as India’s second most powerful figure, was shown in the video making statements about ending aid to specific groups, including Muslims.

Authorities reportedly seized Reddy’s devices to find evidence of video editing software. The Congress Party claims Reddy’s innocence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, associated with a strong Hindu nationalist stance, faced criticism for remarks perceived as targeting Muslims during his election campaign.

This incident underscores the contentious nature of Indian politics during the election season.
