Three Zimbabwean activists, Robson Chere, Namatai Kwekweza, and Samuel Gwenzi, have been denied bail after being forcibly removed from a plane 17 days ago.

They were arrested for allegedly protesting outside a court in June about the arrest of opposition supporters, according to BBC.

The activists were heading to Victoria Falls for a conference when they were taken off their flight.

The court ruled that they might flee or commit more offenses, and could lead to public unrest.

Their lawyer claims they were held for hours without legal help and subjected to torture.

Human rights groups, including UN-appointed experts, have demanded their release and the dropping of all charges.

This case comes just before Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa assumes leadership of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) at a major summit in Harare.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have criticized Zimbabwe’s human rights record and called on Sadc leaders to address these violations.
