David Johansen, the legendary lead singer of the punk band New York Dolls and a famous solo artist under the name Buster Poindexter, has passed away at 75.
According to Parade, Johansen died at his home in New York on February 28. His daughter, Leah Hennessey, shared the news and revealed that he had been battling stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor for years.
As reported by Parade, Johansen’s health struggles became more serious in recent years. In November 2024, he suffered a bad fall that broke his back in two places.
This left him bedridden and worsened his condition. His daughter explained that the family had kept his illness private but decided to share it due to the growing financial challenges they faced.
Johansen was a music icon, starting with the New York Dolls in the 1970s, a band that helped shape punk rock. Later, he became a solo star as Buster Poindexter, known for his hit Hot Hot Hot.
He also formed another group, The Harry Smiths, and even hosted a radio show called David Johansen’s Mansion of Fun on Sirius XM.
But Johansen wasn’t just a musician. As Parade highlights, he also acted in movies like Scrooged (1988) and Let It Ride (1989), and appeared on TV shows like Cupid and OZ.
Johansen is survived by his wife, Mara Hennessey, and his daughter, Leah. His passing marks the end of an era for punk rock and music fans everywhere.
