Netflix faced technical difficulties during its live stream of the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match on November 17, 2024, which was watched by over 60 million viewers.
Many people experienced delays and freezing, with about 85,000 viewers affected by streaming issues, according to Down Detector.
Netflix’s Chief Technology Officer, Elizabeth Stone, acknowledged the problems in an internal memo, stating that the company prioritized stream stability for most viewers but still recognized there was room for improvement.
Despite the issues, Netflix considers the event a success, noting that it reached 65 million concurrent viewers at its peak.
The fight, which Paul won in two eight-minute rounds, set a streaming record for Netflix, surpassing earlier events like the roast of Tom Brady.
Netflix also mentioned the fight’s massive impact on social media. As the company prepares to stream more live events in 2025, including WWE’s Monday Night Raw starting in January, Netflix assured that it would minimize technical difficulties for future shows
