MTN, Africa’s biggest mobile network, has teamed up with Synamedia, a UK video tech company, to create a new streaming platform for African users. According to Reuters, this service will work on both mobile and fibre internet, offering TV shows, movies, and on-demand videos.

MTN started in 1994 as a basic phone and data provider but has grown into a tech and entertainment giant. Now, with more Africans using smartphones and faster internet, MTN sees a big chance to enter the streaming wars.

As reported by Reuters, the new platform will use Synamedia’s cloud technology to give users live TV and on-demand content. It will also have different ways to pay—some channels will be free with ads, while others will need a subscription.

What makes this special? MTN says the service will be customized for each African country, with local languages, shows, and viewing habits in mind. This could give it an edge over global rivals like Netflix, Disney+, and Showmax, which may not always focus on African tastes.

Reuters notes that MTN has 291 million customers across 16 African countries, giving it a huge advantage in reaching viewers. But will it succeed against big names like MultiChoice’s Showmax and Amazon Prime? Only time will tell.
