Modi’s Party Wins Delhi Election After 27 Years, Defeating Opposition

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has won the election in Delhi for the first time in 27 years. According to Reuters, the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi capital district, while the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, won only 22 seats. This victory is a big boost for Modi, especially after his party’s disappointing performance in last year’s national elections.

Modi celebrated the win on social media, promising to work hard to improve life for the people of Delhi. He said, “We will leave no stone unturned in developing Delhi and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.”

The AAP, which started as an anti-corruption movement in 2012, had been ruling Delhi since 2015. During its two terms, the party focused on providing free water, electricity, and better healthcare and education, which made it popular among the poor. However, this time, the BJP managed to win by promising financial support to women, the elderly, and young people. For example, the BJP pledged monthly payments of 2,500 rupees ($28) to poor women, pensions for the elderly, and funds for youth preparing for exams.

Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP leader and a strong critic of Modi, was arrested on corruption charges just before last year’s national elections. He claimed his arrest was politically motivated, but the BJP denies this. Kejriwal, who was released on bail, resigned as Delhi’s chief minister to focus on the election campaign. However, he lost the seat he was contesting. In a video message, Kejriwal said his party would now play the role of a constructive opposition.

Reuters reports that Modi’s BJP has been performing well in state elections, winning three out of the last four. These victories are important because they help the party increase its influence in the upper house of parliament, which is crucial for passing laws and making decisions.

This election marks a significant shift in Delhi’s politics, as the BJP returns to power after nearly three decades. While the AAP’s focus on free services had won them support in the past, the BJP’s promises of direct financial aid seem to have resonated more with voters this time.
