Microsoft is raising prices for its Game Pass subscription service, which offers a library of games for a monthly fee similar to Netflix.

The cost for PC Game Pass will increase by £2 to £9.99 per month, while Game Pass Ultimate will rise to £14.99 monthly.

This change, effective for new subscribers immediately and existing ones in September, follows Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2023.

It also coincides with a shift where Xbox gamers must now subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate to access new game releases on their launch days.

This move is seen as an effort to disrupt the traditional video game sales model dominated by physical purchases.

Analysts note that these adjustments aim to leverage Game Pass’s popularity, which boasts around 34 million subscribers globally, and capitalize on major titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 being available to subscribers from day one.

The price hike now positions Game Pass Ultimate as more expensive than Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium, priced at £13.49 monthly in the UK.
