Nangolo Mbumba becomes Namibia’s new president shortly after announcing the death of the previous president, Hage Geingob, who passed away at 82.

Geingob, a key figure in Namibia’s fight for independence, battled cancer and had been receiving treatment.

Mbumba, now sworn in, praised Geingob’s leadership and assured stability until upcoming elections.

Geingob’s legacy includes leading Namibia’s independence struggle and serving as president since 2015, although his popularity waned amid economic challenges and corruption scandals.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, set to run for president, is now vice-president and could become Namibia’s first female president.
