Malawi suspends passport issuance due to a cyber-attack on the immigration system, leading to a “serious national security breach” according to President Lazarus Chakwera.

The attackers are demanding a ransom, but the government refuses to negotiate. This has caused delays in passport issuance, affecting many Malawians seeking job opportunities abroad.

The government aims to provide a temporary solution within three weeks and develop long-term security measures.

This incident adds to previous challenges, including shortages of passport booklets and contract terminations. Frustrated citizens criticize the government for delays and allege corruption.

As a result, individuals without valid passports cannot travel until the situation is resolved.
