Macron Won’t Name New Prime Minister Until After Paris Olympics
French President Emmanuel Macron has decided not to choose a new prime minister until after the Paris Olympics. He turned down a request from a left-wing group to name Lucie Castets, a lesser-known civil servant, as the new prime minister. This group won the most seats in recent parliamentary elections but still lacks a majority.
Macron believes making a change now would be disruptive, especially with the Olympics starting soon. He said, “We can’t change things before mid-August because it would create disorder,” according to a BBC report.
Castets, who works as a finance director for Paris and has no political experience, was proposed by the New Popular Front (NFP) as their candidate for prime minister. However, Macron pointed out that no party has a clear majority and emphasized that the main issue is which party can build the broadest support in the National Assembly.
The NFP criticized Macron for ignoring the election results and blocking their choice. Some members of the NFP accused Macron of not respecting the voters’ will and trying to delay meaningful changes.
The debate reflects the challenges Macron faces in a fragmented political landscape where no single party has full control, and he is under pressure to navigate these tensions while preparing for the upcoming Olympics.
