Kenya’s top military leader, Gen. Francis Ogolla, died in a helicopter crash along with 11 others in the country’s west.

President William Ruto called it a “sad moment” for Kenya and convened an urgent security meeting.

The crash, which occurred shortly after takeoff, is under investigation. Ogolla, who had served in various military roles for nearly four decades, was hailed as a brave officer who died serving his country.

The nation will observe three days of mourning, starting Friday.

The crash victims were on a mission to address security issues in a region plagued by violence. BBC News reports that the African Union also expressed condolences.
