In Kenya, eight police officers have been suspended for allegedly helping a suspected serial killer escape from custody, according to BBC.

The suspect, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, was held for the murders of 42 women, including his wife, since 2022. His lawyer claims that Khalusha was tortured into confessing.

Khalusha and 12 other detainees managed to escape from a police station by cutting through a wire mesh roof and climbing over a wall.

The police realized they were missing early in the morning when they went to serve breakfast. The other escapees were Eritrean nationals held for illegal entry.

The escape has led to criticism of the police, who failed to notice the missing bodies of the murdered women despite their proximity to a police station.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority is investigating possible police involvement in the murders and other abuses.

This case follows a recent scandal involving mass graves in the Shakahola forest, where over 400 bodies were discovered, allegedly due to a cult leader’s actions.
