Kenya witnessed its largest protests under President William Ruto’s tenure, sparked by public outrage over proposed pay raises for government officials amid economic challenges.

Following widespread criticism and demonstrations, President Ruto halted the planned salary increases for cabinet members and parliamentarians.

This decision came shortly after scrapping a controversial finance bill that had triggered further unrest due to proposed tax hikes.

The move to freeze the salary hikes, initially recommended by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, reflects growing public discontent over economic hardships and calls for government austerity.

The protests, led largely by young Kenyans, evolved beyond economic grievances to demands for accountability and justice following alleged police brutality during demonstrations.
