Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, announces that the government won’t provide money for flood relief despite severe flooding.

This follows a dispute with the Mombasa governor, who contradicted earlier claims of financial aid. Gachagua urges governors to use their existing budgets for emergency response.

Flash floods last week caused at least 13 deaths in Mombasa and nearby counties. Gachagua denies the alleged 10 billion Kenyan shillings assistance.

The Kenya Red Cross reports a total of 71 flood-related deaths in the country. Ongoing heavy rains, linked to the El NiƱo weather phenomenon, have claimed 130 lives in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, according to Oxfam.
