A Kenyan high court has stopped the government from sending police officers to Haiti or any other country until a petition is heard.

The judge said the issues raised in the petition are important for the nation and the public.

One of the people who filed the petition, former presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot, argued that sending police abroad was against the constitution.

There’s also a question about whether regular police officers can be sent on international missions.

Aukot said the country couldn’t afford to send 1,000 officers abroad when there are security problems at home.

Recently, there were ethnic clashes in western Kenya that left seven people dead. And the coastal region of Lamu has faced attacks from the Somalia-based al-Shabab militant group. A curfew is now in place there.

The interior minister said on Sunday that sending officers abroad wouldn’t harm the country’s safety and security.

The court will give more instructions at the end of October.
