Paul Kagame is set to continue as Rwanda’s president for another five years after securing a landslide victory in Monday’s election.
With nearly 79% of ballots counted, Kagame has garnered 99.15% of the vote, according to the electoral commission’s preliminary results.
His opponents, Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana, received less than 1% combined. Kagame, speaking from his party headquarters, expressed gratitude for the trust Rwandans have shown in him, emphasizing that these numbers reflect that trust.
The final election results are expected by July 27, with turnout reportedly high at 98% of eligible voters participating in the elections, which also included legislative seats.
Kagame, who has led Rwanda since the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, faced minimal opposition, with several potential candidates barred from running, including prominent critic Diane Rwigara.
Critics accuse Kagame of restricting freedoms, while supporters highlight his role in Rwanda’s economic growth and reconciliation efforts.
