A judge in Michigan ruled against the Republican Party’s attempt to stop some Americans living abroad from voting in the state, according to Reuters.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) had filed a lawsuit earlier this month, arguing that people who had never lived in Michigan but had relatives who did shouldn’t be allowed to vote there.
However, Judge Sima Patel said the rules Republicans were challenging follow both state and federal law, as Reuters reported.
Reuters also explained that under Michigan law, U.S. citizens who have never lived in the U.S. can vote in Michigan if their parent, guardian, or spouse last lived in the state, as long as they haven’t registered to vote elsewhere.
RNC Chairman Michael Whatley had argued that Michigan voters’ choices shouldn’t be affected by those who have never lived in the state, Reuters mentioned.
Despite this, the judge saw no reason to change the law, saying it’s valid and legal.
