Prisoners have escaped from a high-security jail in Niger’s Tillaberi region, prompting authorities to impose a nighttime curfew.
The jail, known for holding jihadists, saw the breakout near the capital, Niamey, with past attempts thwarted in 2016 and 2019.
The exact number of escapees hasn’t been confirmed, but some are believed to be Islamist fighters linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Niger’s military, already strained by jihadist attacks and political instability, faces challenges in securing the region.
The incident underscores ongoing security threats in the Sahel region, where jihadist violence has led to widespread displacement and humanitarian crises.
