Two top bosses at Kobayashi Pharmaceutical in Japan have resigned as the company looks into 80 deaths that might be connected to its products. The company announced that Akihiro Kobayashi, the president, and Kazumasa Kobayashi, the chairman, both from the founding family, have stepped down to help clarify who is responsible. This decision comes after the company recalled five products in March due to reports of kidney issues from customers.

The investigation started when a doctor raised concerns in January. Customers reported problems like changes in urine color, swollen limbs, and tiredness. The company later discovered a potentially harmful acid from mould at one of its factories.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has expressed its condolences to the families of those who died and has apologized to customers and business partners. Satoshi Yamane, the head of sustainability policy, will become the new president. Akihiro Kobayashi will stay on to handle compensation for affected customers.

Beni kōji, the product in question, is fermented rice used as a health supplement and food dye.

The BBC reports this ongoing issue and the company’s response.
