Indonesia Set to Pass Law Allowing More Military Roles in Government

Indonesia is about to pass a controversial law that will let military personnel take on more civilian government jobs. This move has raised concerns in a country where the military once held significant power during the authoritarian rule of former President Suharto.

According to Reuters, the changes were approved by a parliamentary committee on Tuesday and will be voted on by the full parliament on Thursday. The parliament is controlled by President Prabowo Subianto’s coalition. Prabowo, a former military general and defense minister, has been expanding the military’s role since taking office in October 2023.

Democracy groups are worried this could bring back memories of the “New Order” era (1967-1998), when Suharto filled his government with military officers and silenced opposition. Prabowo, who served under Suharto and was once his son-in-law, has denied that the changes will lead to a return of that era.

The new law will allow military officers to hold positions in more government agencies, such as the attorney general’s office, the counter-terrorism agency, and the narcotics agency. However, officers will need to retire from active military service before taking these roles. The law also extends the retirement age for military personnel.

Critics say the bill was rushed without enough public input. Activists protested outside a Jakarta hotel where lawmakers were discussing the bill, accusing them of ignoring public opinion. Parliament Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad denied these claims, saying the process was transparent.

Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas defended the changes, saying they are needed to address current domestic and geopolitical challenges. However, rights groups fear this could weaken Indonesia’s democracy and give the military too much influence in civilian affairs.

Reuters deserves credit for providing detailed reporting on this developing story. This law could mark a significant shift in Indonesia’s political landscape, raising questions about the balance of power between the military and civilian governments.
