The head of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, defended his decision to seek arrest warrants for both Israeli and Hamas leaders during a BBC interview.

Khan emphasized the importance of applying international law consistently to all parties involved in conflicts. He welcomed the new UK government’s support for the warrants, contrasting it with previous opposition.

Khan explained that the ICC must request warrants for leaders on both sides to maintain global trust in its impartiality. He cited accusations against Israeli leaders for crimes such as targeting civilians and against Hamas leaders for actions including murder and torture.

The ICC’s request for these warrants is still pending approval by judges. Khan also mentioned that some world leaders had pressured him not to issue the warrants.

Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, he expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin would eventually face justice, despite current diplomatic challenges.
