Hospital Uses AI to Spot Lung Cancer Faster, Reports BBC
A hospital in North Yorkshire is using new AI technology to help detect lung cancer and other serious illnesses more quickly. The BBC reports that Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is using software that can analyze chest X-rays in under 30 seconds. This helps doctors spot problems faster and prioritize urgent cases.
The AI acts like a “second pair of eyes” for doctors, checking X-rays for up to 124 possible issues in less than a minute. This speeds up the process of diagnosing conditions like lung cancer, which can save lives by catching diseases earlier.
Dr. Daniel Fascia, a radiologist at the hospital, told the BBC that this technology will help reduce backlogs in X-ray reporting, which built up during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital has already been using AI since July 2023 to find injuries like fractures in X-rays.
