Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has made a political comeback by winning the presidential election.
His main opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, admitted defeat on Sunday and congratulated Mahama.
Bawumia also acknowledged that Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the parliamentary election, as reported by Reuters.
Speaking from his home, Bawumia said their internal vote count showed Mahama had clearly won. He added that while some results were still being finalized, they wouldn’t change the overall outcome.
According to Reuters, Bawumia emphasized that his early concession was to prevent tensions and maintain peace in the country.
Before Bawumia’s statement, there were reports of scuffles at some local centers where polling results were being tallied. In his speech, Bawumia said, “The people have chosen change, and we respect their decision.”
Reuters noted that he also stressed the importance of Ghana’s peaceful image for attracting global investors.
This win marks a significant moment in Ghana’s democracy as power shifts back to Mahama and the NDC.
