Ex-NFL Player Scott Turner Confirmed as US Housing Secretary, Reports BBC
The BBC reports that the US Senate has confirmed Scott Turner, a former NFL player, as the new head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Turner, who played for teams like the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos, will now lead the agency responsible for tackling homelessness, helping renters and homeowners, and fighting housing discrimination.
HUD has a huge budget of over $70 billion and 10,000 employees. Turner previously worked in the Texas legislature and led the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Donald Trump’s first term. During his Senate hearing last month, Turner shared his humble beginnings, including working as a dishwasher in Texas.
Turner told the Senate that the US is facing a housing crisis, with many families struggling to find affordable homes. He also said HUD is “broken” and needs to improve.
The BBC notes that HUD plays a key role in helping low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. It provides rental assistance to over two million families and manages nearly 800,000 public housing units.
The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment, a nonprofit group, said it looks forward to working with Turner to create affordable housing and thriving communities. They also hope to ensure that housing programs receive the federal funding they need.
Turner’s confirmation comes at a time when the US is dealing with a growing homelessness crisis and a shortage of affordable housing.
The BBC highlights that Turner’s background in sports and politics brings a unique perspective to the role, but he faces big challenges in fixing HUD and addressing the nation’s housing problems.
