Former Austrian Finance Minister Grasser Sentenced to 4 Years in Jail for Corruption
Austria’s highest court has confirmed that ex-finance minister Karl-Heinz Grasser must go to prison for four years due to corruption. The court rejected his appeal against a 2020 guilty verdict. Originally, he was given eight years, but the top court cut the sentence in half.
Grasser, now 56, was once a powerful politician in Austria. Between 2000 and 2007, he served as finance minister and was a favorite among conservative voters. He is also known for being married to an heiress of the Swarovski crystal empire.
The case involved a scandal over the sale of thousands of government-owned homes. In 2020, a lower court ruled that Grasser took illegal gifts, committed fraud, and hid evidence. However, Grasser has always denied doing anything wrong.
