European Leaders React to Macron’s Idea of Protecting Europe with France’s Nuclear Weapons – Some Support It, Others Hesitate
European leaders are reacting to French President Emmanuel Macron’s idea of expanding France’s nuclear protection to cover more European countries.
According to Reuters, some leaders welcomed the discussion, while others were unsure about moving away from relying on the United States for security.
During a speech, Macron suggested that Europe should talk about relying more on France’s nuclear weapons for protection.
He mentioned comments from Germany’s likely next leader, Friedrich Merz, who hinted that Germany might have to depend less on the U.S. nuclear shield.
Reuters reported that Macron sees this as a major moment in history, given that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has changed how America deals with Europe’s security.
Trump has been friendlier toward Russia and less supportive of Ukraine, making European leaders rethink their defense strategies.
Some countries showed interest in Macron’s idea. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said it was good that France was open to the discussion.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also said that every option should be on the table when thinking about Europe’s defense.
The Baltic countries, which are close to Russia and fear they could be next if Ukraine falls, also paid attention to the idea.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Gitanas Nauseda called the nuclear umbrella an “important protection” against Russia, as reported by Reuters.
However, many leaders were cautious. The Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said the discussion was “too early” and that Europe’s safety still depended on working with the United States. Germany’s outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz also warned that Europe should not rush into any decisions that could weaken its connection with the U.S.
Macron’s idea also angered Russia. According to Reuters, Russia’s foreign ministry said that if France wants to become the “nuclear protector” of all of Europe, it won’t make anyone safer.
While Macron’s proposal has sparked debate, Reuters reports that European leaders are divided on whether France’s nuclear weapons alone can provide enough protection, or if the U.S. remains essential in defending the continent.
The discussion is far from over, but it is clear that Trump’s policies are making Europe rethink its security plans.
