Ethiopia has a new president after parliament approved the appointment of Taye Atske Selassie, who was previously the foreign minister.

He takes over the ceremonial role from Sahle-Work Zewde, Ethiopia’s first female president, who has reportedly had disagreements with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Sahle-Work, who has been in office since 2018, shared a vague message on social media that hinted at her unhappiness after being quiet for the past year.

Sources told BBC Amharic that she was ready for her term, which ends later this month, to be over.

Throughout her presidency, she called for peace but seemed troubled by ongoing conflicts in the Oromia and Amhara regions.

In Amhara, clashes between federal forces and local militias have resulted in many deaths and serious accusations against security forces.

Taye Atske Selassie, who is 68 years old and has experience working at the UN and in Egypt, is seen as close to Abiy Ahmed.

He was sworn in front of members of parliament on Monday. With Sahle-Work’s departure, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan is now the only female leader in Africa .
