New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been accused of serious crimes, including bribery, wire fraud, and accepting illegal foreign donations for his campaign.
These charges, according to the BBC, were made official on Thursday. Adams, who became mayor nearly three years ago after a career in the police, had promised to tackle crime in New York City.
Now, he’s facing multiple investigations about whether he received illegal funds from foreign countries like Turkey.
Adams, 64, has denied all accusations and said he won’t resign. In a video released by the mayor on Wednesday, he called the charges “false” and “based on lies.”
Since Adams took office at the start of 2022, federal investigators have been watching him and his administration closely. The FBI even searched the home of his main fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, and others involved in his campaign last year.
This investigation is reportedly focused on whether his campaign took illegal donations from the Turkish government and other foreign groups, as BBC explains.
In the past few weeks, Adams’ administration has faced even more trouble. Several top aides, including the police commissioner and the health commissioner, have resigned as the investigations heat up.
According to BBC, David Banks, the head of New York City schools, also announced his resignation. His phones were taken by investigators during a search of his home, which he shares with his partner, Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, in early September.
This situation has created a storm of controversy around Adams’ administration, with many questions still unanswered.
