Elon Musk Says X Hit by Major Cyber-Attack, Causing Widespread Outages”
(Adapted from a BBC report)
Elon Musk has announced that X, formerly known as Twitter, faced a “massive cyber-attack” on Monday, causing thousands of users in the UK and US to experience outages.
Musk, who bought the platform in 2022, suggested the attack might still be happening and said it was carried out with significant resources. According to the BBC, he hinted that a large group or even a country could be behind the attack.
The issues began when outage tracker Downdetector reported tens of thousands of users in the US and over 8,000 in the UK struggling to access X. Many users saw a loading icon instead of their feeds, both on the app and desktop site.
Alp Toker, from internet monitoring group Netblocks, told the BBC that the outages matched patterns of a denial of service (DDoS) attack, where a site is flooded with traffic to take it offline.
Toker explained that the outages lasted more than six hours and had a global impact, making it one of the longest X/Twitter outages ever recorded.
While Musk has previously claimed the platform was targeted by DDoS attacks, these have not been confirmed.
The BBC reports that this incident highlights the ongoing challenges X faces in maintaining its services amid increasing cyber threats. As users rely on the platform for news and communication, such outages can cause significant disruption.
