Blueberries are in season, and everyone is talking about a viral trick that claims to help you find the sweetest ones.
Parade explains that the trick, called the blueberry float test, suggests adding blueberries to a bowl of water to see which ones float and which ones sink.
According to the theory, the sweeter blueberries will sink, while the sour ones will float.
But does this trick actually work? Parade shares insights from an expert, Chris Enroth, a horticulturist from the University of Illinois Extension.
He says the float test can indeed be a helpful way to identify ripe and sweet blueberries. This is because blueberries that sink have more sugar, making them heavier and denser than water.
On the other hand, those that float have less sugar and might taste sour.
However, Parade also points out that several factors can affect a blueberry’s sweetness, like the type of blueberry, the soil it grows in, and the weather.
Not all blueberries are equally sweet, and some types are naturally sweeter than others.
If you’re picking your own blueberries, Parade suggests choosing ones that are firm, plump, and dark blue, with a silver-white bloom on the skin.
Parade also advises that blueberries don’t ripen much after they’re picked, so it’s important to pick or buy ripe ones.
Though this float test isn’t foolproof, Parade highlights that it’s a simple method to give you a general idea of which blueberries might taste the best.
Whether they’re sweet or a bit sour, blueberries can be enjoyed fresh, blended into smoothies, or baked into delicious treats.
