Using scented candles during the holidays might not be as harmless as it seems. Doctors warn that some popular holiday candles, like those with balsam, cinnamon, or candy cane scents, could pose health risks, including cancer, dementia, and heart problems.

Parade explains that burning these candles releases harmful chemicals into the air, including carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and formaldehyde, which can cause serious health issues.

Dr. Asit Kumar Mishra and Dr. Marie Coggins, who co-authored the study, highlighted how indoor candle use worsens air quality, especially when windows are closed in winter.

Parade noted that these chemicals could lead to respiratory problems, headaches, coughing, and even short-term memory issues similar to dementia. People with asthma or other breathing conditions are at even greater risk.

Parade also pointed out that scented candles with synthetic fragrances and dyes release more pollutants, like phthalates, which are linked to conditions such as ADHD, breast cancer, and allergies. Even “natural” candles may not be safe, as they can interact with the air’s natural ozone to create harmful byproducts.

To use candles more safely, Parade suggests burning them in large rooms with good ventilation, keeping windows open, and using air purifiers to clean the air.

If possible, snuff out candles outside to avoid inhaling the smoke. Parade emphasizes the importance of caution, especially since many candle manufacturers don’t list ingredients, making it hard to know exactly what’s in the air.

While scented candles bring joy and nostalgia, Parade reminds us that it’s better to enjoy them carefully to protect our health.
