In 1965, a 78-year-old man from Karnataka, India, was arrested for allegedly taking two buffaloes and a calf.
58 years ago, Ganapati Vitthal Wagore, then 20, was first arrested along with another man for stealing two buffaloes and a calf. They got bail but vanished and couldn’t be found. His co-accused passed away in 2006. Recently, due to his age, Wagore was granted bail after being rearrested.
The case had been cold until police decided to search old files. The theft happened in Bidar, Karnataka, but Wagore was caught in different villages in Maharashtra. He and another man, Krishna Chander, had confessed in 1965. After bail, they didn’t respond to court notices.
Last month, police found a clue in Maharashtra’s Thakalagaon village, where Wagore had been living in a temple. Scared to face court, he was brought back to Karnataka and represented by a pro bono lawyer.
