A tornado hit a town in eastern China, killing five people and injuring nearly 100, according to Xinhua news agency.
Dramatic social media videos showed the tornado tearing roofs off houses and uprooting trees, with debris flying everywhere.
Dongming County’s Emergency Management Bureau said the severe weather caused the tornado. The local government quickly set up a command center and launched emergency response operations.
The tornado damaged 2,820 homes in Caiyuan, Shandong province, and emergency services are now cleaning up the area.
While tornadoes are less common in China than in the US, they do occur. China averages fewer than 100 tornadoes a year, with at least 1,772 people dying from them between 1961 and 2011. In April, a tornado in Guangzhou killed five and injured 33.
China’s Meteorological Administration recently reported that 2023 was the country’s warmest year since 1901, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe.
Other parts of China are also experiencing severe weather, with drought and high temperatures in the north and heavy rains in the south.
