Croatia’s deputy prime minister, Josip Dabro, has stepped down after a video showed him shooting randomly from a moving car. In the video, Dabro is seen laughing, chatting, and singing to loud music before picking up a pistol and firing out of the car’s open window at night.

According to the BBC, he explained that the video was old and that he had used training bullets, but this didn’t stop people from criticizing his actions.

Dabro is a member of the hard-right Homeland Movement party, which is part of Croatia’s coalition government formed in May 2024. The government called his behavior “inappropriate and irresponsible,” as reported by the BBC.

Dabro, who also served as minister for agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, announced his resignation on Facebook. He said he didn’t want to distract the government, especially since he’s been facing “pressure and threats” over his plans to reform his department.

The BBC also noted that this is the latest problem for Croatia’s coalition. In November, the Health Minister, Vili Bros, was removed after corruption allegations. Meanwhile, political tensions have risen after Zoran Milanovic was re-elected as president on Monday.

He won a landslide victory, but Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, leader of the centre-right HDZ party, criticized Milanovic and refused to congratulate him. According to the BBC, presidents in Croatia have mostly symbolic roles, but the feud shows deeper divisions in the government.

This incident adds to growing concerns about stability in Croatia’s leadership. The video scandal has made people question the government’s ability to manage internal conflicts, as highlighted by the BBC.
