According to Reuters, many countries gathered at a United Nations meeting in Geneva on Tuesday to show support for Ukraine. This happened a day after the U.N. Security Council approved a resolution written by the U.S. that stayed neutral about the war.
Reuters explained that this resolution, passed on the third anniversary of the war, reflects how U.S. President Donald Trump has changed America’s approach to Ukraine, taking a softer stance toward Russia.
At the meeting, Norway’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik reassured Ukraine that it is not alone. Reuters reported that he told diplomats and ministers in the room that Norway and other nations will keep supporting Ukraine as it defends its land, independence, and people’s dignity.
Since Russia invaded in 2022, thousands of Ukrainians have died, and more than 6 million have fled to other countries. Reuters noted that Russia continues to justify its actions by blaming NATO’s expansion toward the east, calling the war a “special military operation.”
Estonia’s Minna-Liina Lind, who works on global issues, expressed deep concern that the Security Council’s resolution did not mention Ukraine’s territorial rights, something that had been included in past statements. But she told Reuters that even though some nations are not as strong in their support now, others are stepping up.
The U.S. tried to get the U.N. General Assembly to approve the same neutral resolution, but it failed. Instead, Reuters reported that the General Assembly passed decisions that leaned more in favor of Ukraine, which was seen as a diplomatic win over Washington.
Many European nations attended the Geneva meeting, including France and Germany, but countries like Turkey, South Korea, Australia, and Japan were also present.
The U.S. sent a representative but did not speak. Reuters described how Ukraine’s ambassador Yevheniia Filipenko became emotional while urging countries to keep helping Ukraine rebuild and hold Russia accountable for war crimes.
Filipenko admitted that Ukraine has a tough road ahead, but she told the room that unity will help them succeed.
Reuters emphasized that while international politics around the war are shifting, Ukraine continues to fight for survival and global support remains crucial.
