Comedy legend Bob Newhart has passed away at 94, following a series of brief illnesses, according to his publicist Jerry Digney, as reported by Parade.
Newhart, known for his deadpan humor and unique stammering style, rose to fame with his hit TV show “The Bob Newhart Show,” where he played Dr. Robert “Bob” Hartley.
His career began as a stand-up comedian in the late 1950s, and he won a Grammy Award in 1961 for his comedy album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” which was the first comedy album to top the Billboard charts.
In 1962, Newhart also won a Golden Globe for Best TV Star. He won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for “The Bob Newhart Show,” though it was ultimately canceled.
Later in his career, he had memorable roles in “Hell Is for Heroes,” “Legally Blonde 2,” and “Elf,” and made a notable appearance in “The Big Bang Theory” in 2013, which earned him another Emmy.
Newhart’s wife of 60 years, Ginny, passed away in April 2023. He had shared his grief publicly, calling her his “rock” and expressing how deeply she is missed.
