Beijing is taking action against aggressive fans at the Paris Olympics who are causing issues for Chinese athletes. According to BBC, state media reports say that fans have been behaving badly by booing, accusing referees of unfairness, and creating negativity online.
This situation came to a head on August 3 when Chinese table tennis player Chen Meng won gold over her teammate Sun Yingsha. Many fans reacted strongly online, with some criticizing Chen and others even wishing harm on her. Chinese social media has removed thousands of posts and banned over 800 accounts for spreading negativity.
The Chinese government has been cracking down on what it calls “toxic” fan culture for years. They have banned celebrity rankings, restructured fan clubs, and regularly clean up harmful content from fan pages. The state-run Global Times has criticized the aggressive behavior of fans, saying it harms both athletes and the reputation of Chinese sports.
Authorities have warned fans not to film or follow athletes excessively and have asked for more respect and restraint. The goal is to maintain order and sportsmanship during events, as echoed by veteran athlete Deng Yaping who has called for respectful behavior from fans.
