China and Vietnam have signed 14 agreements, covering a range of areas from cross-border railways to crocodile exports, following a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vietnam’s new leader, To Lam, in Beijing, according to Reuters.
This is Lam’s first trip abroad since becoming party chief earlier this month, showing his intent to strengthen ties with China.
Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of Vietnam in China’s regional diplomacy and expressed support for Vietnam’s development path.
Lam also highlighted the significance of the relationship with China, calling his visit a confirmation of Vietnam’s commitment to this partnership.
During the visit, Lam requested Chinese support for soft loans and technology to improve Vietnam’s transport infrastructure. Both leaders agreed to enhance defense and security cooperation, boost railway and highway connections, and Xi promised to increase imports of Vietnamese agricultural products.
The agreements include plans for standardized railway routes and feasibility studies for cross-border rail projects, which were initially discussed during Xi’s visit to Hanoi last December.
The improved rail links are expected to facilitate trade and investment, particularly as Chinese manufacturers shift some operations to Vietnam amid U.S.-China trade tensions.
Additional agreements cover cooperation between central banks, media, health sectors, and the inspection of various goods including coconuts, crocodiles, and durians.
Xi and Lam also continued their discussions in a friendly setting, with plans to issue a joint declaration on strengthening their strategic partnership.
Lam’s visit will also include meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and visits to sites in Guangzhou linked to former President Ho Chi Minh, according to Reuters.
