Canada Fights Back with 25% Tariffs on $30 Billion of U.S. Goods

According to Reuters, Canada has announced it will immediately impose 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. imports. This move comes as a direct response to U.S.

President Donald Trump’s decision to place 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods earlier in the day.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the U.S. tariffs unnecessary and unjustified. He said Canada will challenge the U.S. actions through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA).

Reuters reports that if the U.S. tariffs remain in place, Canada plans to add another 25% tax on $125 billion worth of U.S. imports in 21 days.

Trudeau emphasized that Canada will not back down and is prepared to take further action to protect its economy.

This trade dispute marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two neighboring countries. While the U.S. argues its tariffs are needed to protect American industries, Canada sees them as unfair and harmful to both economies.

In short, as Reuters explains, Canada is standing its ground in this trade fight, using tariffs as a tool to push back against U.S. measures while seeking resolution through international trade rules.
