Burkina Faso Critic Punished with Frontline Duty

An anaesthetist, Arouna Louré, who spoke out against Burkina Faso’s military rulers, faced punishment. Soldiers abruptly pulled him from surgery and forced him to join the fight against jihadists.

This move is part of the junta’s effort to recruit 50,000 volunteers to combat the jihadist threat. Louré’s case reflects a broader crackdown on dissent, with activists, journalists, and opposition figures also being conscripted.

Despite the hardships, some, like Louré, remain hopeful for Burkina Faso’s future amidst the crisis.
