A British safety advisor named Ryan Evans, who was working with a Reuters news team in eastern Ukraine, was killed in a missile attack on a hotel in Kramatorsk on Saturday.

The hotel, where Evans and five other Reuters staff were staying, was hit by a missile that Ukrainian officials believe came from Russia. Russia has not yet responded to the claims.

Reuters confirmed Evans’s death and expressed deep sorrow. They are working with local authorities in Kramatorsk to gather more details about the attack and are supporting the affected colleagues and their families. The strike also injured two other team members, one of whom is in serious condition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as part of ongoing “Russian terror” and offered his condolences. The Ukrainian General Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the missile used was likely a short-range Iskander-M.

Kramatorsk, located about 12 miles from Russian-held territory, has faced frequent attacks. The situation in the region is tense, with ongoing conflict and recent advances by Russian forces in the east.

BBC’s coverage highlights the tragic loss and the continued danger faced by journalists working in conflict zones.
