Armenia’s President Vahagn Khachaturyan has approved the Rome Statute, which means they agree to follow the rules of the International Criminal Court (ICC), even though Russia warned against it. This was mentioned in a statement on Saturday.
Khachaturyan’s office released a statement confirming that he approved the treaty, which means Armenia now acknowledges the authority of the International Criminal Court.
Armenian lawmakers supported this decision earlier this month. Moscow is upset because the court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin due to the improper removal of Ukrainian children to Russia. If Putin visits a country that’s part of the ICC, they might arrest him.
Khachaturyan signed the approval after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan didn’t attend a meeting with Putin in Kyrgyzstan this week.
Armenia believes that becoming part of the ICC will let them look into what they consider as war crimes by Azerbaijan after Baku’s attack to regain Nagorno-Karabakh. The relationship between Moscow and Yerevan has worsened since Baku’s military action, in which Russian peacekeepers didn’t get involved.
