Fumihiko Maki, a celebrated Japanese architect known for blending Eastern and Western design, has died at 95.
Winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, Maki’s notable works include the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, 4 World Trade Center in New York, and Tokyo’s Spiral building.
He criticized the original costly design of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium, advocating for a more modest design.
Educated at the University of Tokyo and Harvard, Maki was also a dedicated teacher and author.
His influence on modern architecture, especially in postwar Japan, remains significant.
