Afenyo-Markin Warns Bank of Ghana Governor: Stay Independent, Avoid Politics – MyJoyOnline Reports”

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has advised the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, not to let himself be used for political purposes, according to MyJoyOnline. Speaking in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin urged the governor to remain independent and avoid being drawn into political controversies.

MyJoyOnline reports that Afenyo-Markin referenced past concerns about the Bank of Ghana’s oversight of the banking sector, warning against selective scrutiny of the central bank’s activities. He questioned why certain issues were being prioritized now, asking, “Are we picking and choosing which matters we want the governor to brief us on?”

Addressing Dr. Asiama directly, Afenyo-Markin said, “Mr. Governor, don’t make yourself a tool for political football.” He emphasized the importance of the governor’s role in maintaining the country’s economic stability and urged others not to politicize the office.

MyJoyOnline highlights that Afenyo-Markin also cautioned the Majority in Parliament to handle economic issues carefully, warning that their approach could harm Ghana’s financial stability. His comments came as Dr. Asiama was set to brief Parliament on the cost of the Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters.

The Minority opposed the briefing, arguing that the correct procedures were not followed, while the Majority insisted there was nothing wrong with the process. MyJoyOnline notes that this disagreement reflects the ongoing tension between the two sides over how economic matters are handled.
