US Justice Department to Compensate Larry Nassar Survivors with $138.7M

The US Justice Department has agreed to pay $138.7 million to survivors of Larry Nassar, the disgraced former national gymnastics team doctor convicted of sexual assault.

The settlement follows a lawsuit in which victims accused the FBI of mishandling complaints against Nassar.

Among the 139 claimants were prominent gymnasts like Simone Biles and Aly Raisman. The FBI’s failure to take the complaints seriously, despite a 2015 investigation, was highlighted by the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General.

Nassar’s abuse continued for years, even after initial reports to the FBI. The survivors, mostly athletes from USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University, endured years of betrayal and mistrust from institutions meant to protect them.

While the settlement won’t erase the harm inflicted by Nassar, it aims to provide support for survivors in their healing journey.

However, it’s a stark reminder of the failures of those in positions of authority to protect vulnerable individuals.

This settlement adds to the over $1 billion already paid out in legal settlements related to Nassar’s abuse.

It underscores the magnitude of the harm caused and the need for institutions to prioritize the safety and well-being of those under their care.
