US Accuses Zimbabwe of Mistreating Aid Workers

The US government has criticized Zimbabwe for mistreating and expelling its citizens who were in the country as aid workers.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) stated that these workers were there to support democratic institutions and human rights but faced intimidation and harassment from Zimbabwean officials.

This condemnation comes alongside the US imposing fresh sanctions on Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other officials for alleged corruption and human rights abuses.

USAID Administrator Samantha Power highlighted incidents of detention, interrogation, and seizure of personal belongings of aid workers, calling Zimbabwe’s commitment to democratic reform “hollow.”

Despite these challenges, USAID vows to continue supporting civil society and human rights in Zimbabwe.
