Women Take Center Stage in DR Congo Election Lead-Up

As the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) gears up for its presidential election, women’s issues are in the spotlight. President FĂ©lix Tshisekedi’s focus on women’s rights is evident in campaign posters and advertisements, showcasing his commitment to policies like free maternity care. Implemented since September 2023, this initiative is making a difference, providing financial relief for mothers like Julie, who previously struggled to afford childbirth expenses.

The impact of free maternity care extends beyond individual families. At Kinshasa General Hospital, doctors praise the policy for reducing maternal and infant mortality, emphasizing its positive effects on healthcare overall. Hospital director Dr. Jean-Paul Divengi acknowledges the progress but stresses the need for continued support from technical and financial partners for the program’s success.

Despite these efforts, not everyone is convinced of the initiative’s effectiveness. Some, like lawyer Arlette Ottia, see it as a political move rather than a practical solution, questioning the real impact on women.

President Tshisekedi’s administration defends its record on women’s rights, citing increased female representation in state administrations and public enterprises. Tshisekedi’s spokesperson, Tina Salama, labels him a “feminist president” and points to the rise in women holding decision-making positions.

However, challenges persist on the road to women’s emancipation. Organizations like the Jema’h Association work towards promoting women’s rights, particularly in education and employment. Despite progress, cultural obstacles and discrimination still exist, with variations between urban and rural areas.

As the DRC heads to the polls on December 20, the elections will not only determine the next president but also the representation of women in various governmental positions. With over 29,000 women candidates, the outcome will shed light on the progress of women’s participation in Congolese public life. A successful and fair election is crucial for both women and democracy in the country. (France 24)
